INDIAN NEWS PARADE NO 66 (16/6/1944)

Synopsis

I. "ORGANIZED MEASURES ENSURE FOODGRAINS IN PLENTY" Scenes showing the delivery and distribution of Government grain in a village Co-operative society, where "it's distributed at a fair price to all who need it, share and share alike". Mr Crosthwait oversees delivery of Lot One, consisting of two thousand bags. Scene of a celebratory procession of five hundred and twenty-five carts and a village band. Commentary notes, "the food scheme had certainly hit the right note".

II. "JOHR MELA" Celebrations of Jor Mela festival which marks the memory by Sikhs of the son of the Sikh Guru Arjun Dev Ji, who was tortured for refusing to marry the daughter of a minister at the court of Jehangir. Scenes of the Golden Temple at Amritsar, Punjab, which was built as a monument to Arjun Dev Ji; people listen to the words of the Granth Sahib, the sacred book of the Sikhs (also known as the Adi'Granth) which he compiled. Master Singh "has the time of his life" while the pictures of the congregation "portrays the Sikhs in all the dignity which is their mark".

III. "WELFARE WORKERS TOIL FOR SLUM DWELLERS" Provision of sanitary and food care for slum children at a Lucknow Health Centre. Scenes of children being cleaned, dried and receiving a free milk ration, "served in a way that is hygienic enough for the best table in the land". Commentary also notes that to mothers "the Health Centre gives their children a chance in life that they never had themselves".

IV. "AROUND KOHIMA" Scenes depicting the attack and eventual removal of Japanese positions at the Kohima crossroads. Mules are called in as transport and tanks and troops move into position. Scenes of the waiting and start of the artillery attack. Gurkha troops move cautiously around the ruins of the treasury building following the "tornado of steel".
