INDIAN NEWS PARADE NO 77 (1/9/1944)

Synopsis

I. "V.A.D. NURSES NOW IN INDIA" Lady Colville and daughter welcome the Voluntary Aid Detachment (VAD) to India from England, "the girls that beat the blitz". Mother and daughter discuss the flying bomb with the girls. Later, Lady Colville gives a swimming party. Commentary notes that "among the guests, right among them, was Susie (a dog) ready to volunteer for anything".

II. "FIGHTING EIGHTH ON THE TIBER RIVER". The Grenadier Guard band plays in a Roman Stadium built by the Fascists of Il Duce. Scenes of a "six-mile race" although the commentary notes the runners did not make "quite such good time as the Italians made down these roads in a recent event". Scenes of the "three victors". The Indian Division receives visit from Lieutenant-General The Maharajah of Kashmir, War Cabinet Representative who speaks to them, then leaves by flying jeep. Scenes of dead German soldiers and German prisoners "who have lost the swagger". Allied armour advances on Santa Lucia, as "Indian troops form a link in the steel that steadily encircles Germany".

III. "INDIAN SOLDIERS HOME ON LEAVE" Return home of Indian soldiers of the Eighth Army on leave. Commentary notes, "The Commander-in-Chief's message said what we feel, 'what you've done will long be remembered.' " Commentary makes reference to 'The Famous Fourth [Division]'. Awards for gallantry are announced, prior to arrival.

IV. "JUNGLE WARFARE ON BURMA'S SECOND FRONT". Parachutes ‘floating advertisements to the Japs that Chindits are around’. Mules onto river rafts. West African Chindits (111 Brigade) gather supplies. Stacked supplies. Medical treatment for Burmese locals. Allied casualties are evacuated on stretchers; a Sunderland flying boat of RAF 230 Squadron approaches. Wounded are ferried to the Sunderland on Lake Indawgyi and they board the aircraft. Sunderland takes off. Aircrew on board and the Brahmaputra river below. Waiting medics receive the casualties who are taken away by ambulance.
