INDIAN NEWS PARADE NO 78 (8/9/1944)

Synopsis

I. "SHOWING THE WAY TO MUTUAL UNDERSTANDING" Professor Wadia shows a party of VADs (Voluntary Aid Detachments) from London, led by Ambulance Sister Miss Colville, some of the ruins from previous wars. Commentary states that "Professor Wadia believes that to understand India you must understand her history". Scenes of temples and Professor Wadia offering explanations. "Like all religions, it's got two principles: Do good. Do your duty. And that's just what these VADs are doing."

II. "AMERICAN SOLDIERS GET HOME LEAVE AFTER TWO YEARS WAR SERVICE" American GIs preparing to board leave boat after two years service, as part of US Army's rotation policy. "For the first time in their history," notes the commentary, "thousands of ordinary plain Americans have seen the East with their own eyes. That in a Democracy, might be a big thing." Scenes of American Army women in uniform and men with kit bags.

III. "INDIA'S FOOD PROBLEMS ENGAGE ATTENTION OF BRITAIN'S EXPERTS" Sir Henry Wrench of Britain's Ministry of Food is in Delhi overlooking a rationing scheme, "that's proving that India's public can be as disciplined as any other, given the right lead". Sir John Woodhead meets members of the Famine Enquiry Mission in Calcutta. "With the fate of millions in their hands, the experts get down to work."

IV. "INDIA'S YOUNGEST V.C: KAMAL RAM DECORATED IN ITALY BY HIS MAJESTY THE KING" Twenty one year old Kamal Ram is awarded the VC after seizing two German machine-gun posts single-handedly, and helping to take a third. Subedar Major assists Ram with his appearance. Scenes of the Eighth Punjab Regiment on parade and General Alexander and two other Generals. Kamal Ram receives medal from King George VI.

V. ‘THE CAPTURE OF HILL 60’. Footage of fighter-bomber and medium bomber atttack and troops on foot. Smoke spreading in distance. Troops moving up. Searching dead Japanese. Chinese soldier fires his Thompson into a bunker and a dead Japanese soldier is dragged out. Troops moving up. ‘For the Japs it’s been a massacre’.
