INDIAN NEWS PARADE NO 81 (29/9/1944)

Synopsis

I. "WACIs ALSO SERVE WITH THE ROYAL INDIAN NAVY" Members of the WACI (Women's Army Corps of India) work as cipher clerks for the RIN (Royal Indian Navy). "These women keep secrets", states the commentary, "that's supposed to be the one thing a woman can't do, but the WACIs do it very well." Scenes of women, wearing skirts and saris, working in the cipher office. A message is received by a wireless operator and is taken by a messenger to the WACIs for decoding, where it reaches checking department to check the decoding. Message is then typed and taken to distribution department.

II. "REFUGEES IN INDIA PRAY FOR THE LIBERATION OF POLAND FROM THE NAZIS" Polish refugee children in Karachi pray for Poland's liberation from the Nazis in a temporary church with makeshift altar. Commentary notes that the "children hear that they need no longer fear slavery", or be called "subhuman" again.

III. "FIFTEENTH ANNIVERSARY OF THE CHINESE AIR FORCE" A flag of the Chinese Republic flies over members of the Chinese Air Force in India, following the words of the Republic's founder Doctor Sun Yat-Sen: "Make China safe; build an air force". An ancient sword is presented to Colonel Hwoo, "tribute to the man who's forged China's latest weapon". Air display marking the fifteenth anniversary of the Chinese Air Force.

IV. "THE ROYAL AIR FORCE COMMEMORATES THE BATTLE OF BRITAIN IN SPIRIT AND IN ACTION" Air Commodore Vincent attends a commemoration service in Bombay to mark the anniversary of the Battle of Britain. Scenes of men and women of the RAF. A heavily loaded air support plane takes off into cloudy skies over Burma to supply a forward unit. Scenes of the Hurricane as bomber, "the more famous Hurribomber" with bombs carried beneath wings. Hurribombers descend to attack a Japanese camp and then a small hut with sixty Japanese inside. On its return, the bomber shoots up the airstrip, signalling a successful mission. Pieces of tree branch are removed from a hole in the wing, the low dive, "an example of the skill and daring that won the Battle of Britain".
