INDIAN NEWS PARADE NO 85 (27/10/1944)

Synopsis

I. "THE ROVERS CUP FINAL" Rovers Cup Trophy match between the British Reinforcement Camp and the WIAA staff. The Camp won 3 - 1, with forward Pullen scoring a hat trick.

II. "REWARDS FOR RECRUITING" Chattisgarh in the Central Province was scene of a Commissioner's visit to thank men responsible for recruiting the large numbers of Chattisgarh soldiers. The best Districts receive mementos and a shield is presented to the recruiters. Commentary notes that "the speeches stressed the fact that India's protected by the world's greatest volunteer army".

III. "JODHPUR - SWORD OF HONOUR FROM THE INDIAN AIR FORCE" Air Commodores the Maharajah of Jodhpur and the Nawab of Bhopal meet at an Indian Airport to present Sword of Honour to the Indian Air Force (IAF). Forged in Jodhpur, the sword bears a "hilt of solid gold" and is received by Captain Hilton on behalf of the School Group. Maharajah salutes the IAF. Commentary notes Maharajah's speech. "People abroad, he said, are going to judge India by her fighting Parade. They, in fact, are India's Ambassadors."

IV. "PARATROOPERS IN THE MAKING" Scenes of Indian Airborne Division in training, mastering the ropes, the swing, landing and falling. Commentary notes that although the war is often described as a war of machines, "never before has the human body been so intensively trained". Scenes of paratroopers in plane, preparing for first jump. The jumps take place. Unharnessing upon landing the troops then pack up their parachutes. Commentary notes that the paratroopers are "trained like falcons...winged deaths dropping straight down upon their prey out of the blue".

V. "JAPS ROUTED ON THE MAYU RIDGE" Japanese storm Mayu Ridge then "Allied artillery turns the attack into a rout". Scenes of Allied casualties in a field dressing station amidst heavy fighting. Major Lawrence of the Gurkhas wins the MC in the Mayu victory as he fought Japanese hand to hand "flinging enemy soldiers over the cliff".
