INDIAN NEWS PARADE NO 86 (3/11/1944)

Synopsis

I. "NAVY DAY IN INDIA" Governor of Bombay meets Admiral Godfrey of the Royal Indian Navy for the Navy Day Parade in Bombay. Nelson's "famous signal" is hoisted although commentary notes that a more appropriate signal would be "England expects every man...and woman...to do his...and her duty". Scenes of the Navy's rocket gun on display. In Calcutta, General Mayne takes salute at "India's front line port" as floats pass led by one carrying a Bofors Gun. Another carries a landing craft. Scenes of a pilot boat, example of "a Navy that's grown twenty times bigger since the war began".

II. "BRINGING DOWN THE FOOD GRAIN PRICES" Ships carrying wheat stream into Indian ports. Commentary notes that "Most of us had placidly believed that India, somehow or other, grew so much food that she could look after herself whatever happened. Suddenly we knew the truth." The grain is carried by lorries to Government Grain Depots, "defence posts against famine". The Government Transport Service vehicles are the "mobile columns in India's perennial war to win food for her people".

III. "JOURNALISTS VISIT INDIAN AIR FORCE TRAINING CENTRE" Journalists of Bombay Press are shown how India's Air Force is trained. Scenes of training planes being refuelled and a pupil making his first flight. Aircraftsman Wray gives his impression of Jam-e-Jamshed's Billimoria in return.

IV. "FOR VALOUR - KAMAL RAM, NAND SINGH, GANJU LAMA" Scenes of the portraits of Kamal Ram VC and Nand Singh VC by the Official War Artist, plus an unofficial portrait of Ganju Lama VC. In the grounds of Delhi's ancient fort, the trio are meeting Lord Wavell, the Viceroy. Four other VCs are present with their families, including Kamal Ram's father. Also in attendance were the widows of Jemadar Abdul and Subedar Subramaniam, first Indian winner of the George Cross. Scenes of the military parade and the Eighth Punjab Regiment, "these gallant sons of India".
