ROVING REPORT NO 59

This film is held by the Imperial War Museum (ID: ITN 177).

Synopsis

Report outlines the political background to the stepped-up violence in Aden and shows how conditions for British soldiers and their families are becoming increasingly dangerous.

Anti-British terrorism will not cease, according to the Aden TUC president and a former minister (both supporters of the leading nationalist movement FLOSY), until Britain releases detainees and agrees to the UN resolution which calls for free elections. Violence will therefore continue and film of recent incidents (demonstrators beat an Arab to death, soldiers fire tear gas at a nationalist mob) and a list of British civilians murdered suggests the probable course of events until the final British withdrawal. In the meantime soldiers patrol in armoured cars and jeeps, keep watch from rooftops, search Arabs and escort children's buses to school where the pupils are taught not to pick up any odd items or go out alone. Their mothers speak of being confined to their quarters and their enjoyment of the pleasures advertised by the army for families serving abroad is restricted to sunbathing on a heavily fortified beach. Special bulletins on the British Forces Broadcasting Service list dangerous areas and urge vigilance.
