ROVING REPORT NO 76

This film is held by the Imperial War Museum (ID: ITN 188).

Synopsis

Report in two sections.

1. Prime Minister Ian Smith and a former tobacco farmer explain how Rhodesia has overcome the effect of sanctions introduced last December by the UN. Statistical evidence that the GNP is down and national growth stagnant is offset by Smith's description of the "tremendous advantages" of sanctions to Rhodesia - the creation of new industries and consequently greater economic independence. Prime Minister appears not over-concerned about reaching a settlement with Britain on UDI (also the name of his dog) and his main worry now is the "infiltration by Asiatics into European areas causing a drop in the standard of living"; legislation would stop this infiltration. 2. Effect of Middle East war has been an influx of 150,000 Palestinian refugees into East Jordan and a tourist standstill which is depriving Jordan of the money necessary to support them. Jerusalem is now occupied by Israel and another key tourist spot, the ancient city of Petra, is entirely deserted. Refugees crossing the wrecked Allenby Bridge carry bedding and other possessions as they trudge on towards emergency camps. Camp near Amman is visited by Princess Muna who appeals for immediate aid and denies allegations of Israeli ill-treatment of the refugees. General Dayan informally asks refugees still fleeing eastwards why they are leaving.
