WAR OFFICE OFFICIAL TOPICAL BUDGET 353-1 (French version, fragment)

This film is held by the Imperial War Museum (ID: IWM 675b).

Synopsis

Both the fte and the film stress the fact that the Duchess was American. The children present her with a bouquet in their school playground. She addresses them while a child waves a US flag behind her head. On the dais with her is a man in the uniform of a Chelsea Pensioner.

The recipients of the awards are from all services. One receives a knighthood. The airship SSZ49 (described as "un avion") overflies the palace during the ceremony.

Lloyd George arrives for the ceremony in part of a convoy of cars. He reviews a military guard, and leaves through a cheering crowd. (Some members of the crowd are of African or West Indian origin.)

The three winners are shown in turn. Firstly, R Farrant of Fraser & Fraser, London, is chaired by his mates and posed with his rivet gun. He set the record at 4,376 rivets in nine hours. D Deviney of Glasgow, who raised this to 4,422 rivets in the same time, is posed in his back garden in his best clothes (including fob watch and waistcoat). Finally, W Moses of Vickers Ltd, Barrow-in-Furness, who managed 5,984 rivets, is shown at work with his rivet gun, then posed with it.
