Synopsis

Newsreel item on aircraft of 14 Squadron flying over Mount Kenya, probably 1931.

The squadron pilots start up their Fairey IIIF aircraft and take off. Three of them, and the camera plane (see note below), overfly the mountain, which is covered with snow.

Notes

Summary: in the early 1930s 14 Squadron was based at Amman in Transjordan. The detachment in Kenya was presumably part of a goodwill flight or security operation

Summary: in the early 1930s 14 Squadron was based at Amman in Transjordan. The "East African Cruise" was a flag-showing operation. Although he is never seen, it is worthy of note that the pilot of the camera plane was Wing-Commander A T Harris - to be better known as 'Bomber' Harris in the Second World War

Technical: this item is held on a single reel with films IWM 880-02a to IWM 880-02d. The can is marked as IWM 880-02

Remarks: the view of the mountain and snow from the open aircraft is very attractive
