This film is held by the Imperial War Museum (ID: JFU 520).

Synopsis

Troops of 24th Indian Mountain Regiment mount a patrol in the Grisee (Grisek), Silo, Telopatoet (Tlogopatut?) Sidomoekto (Sidomukti), and Wonokitri areas (north west of Surabaya) of Java, Netherlands East Indies (Indonesia).

Opening shots almost totally black (footage taken at dawn) with only a little movement visible. Silhouettes of Indian troops passing camera with the sky lightening behind them; some wear turbans, others berets or steel helmets. Soldiers crouched in undergrowth. Face of an Indian with rifle crouched in thick cover. Men move along a narrow jungle track. More men move along as others keep watch. File of men moving the track. Feet trudging through mud. A British (?) soldier speaks to a number of Indonesian civilians. Panning landscape shots. Landscape with soldier, with his back to camera, with a slung Sten submachine gun. Landscape shot. A photographer, probably War Correspondent Allan MacPherson, smokes a cigarette. Patrol commander speaks on a wireless set. RAF Thunderbolt fighter-bomber overhead. Vickers medium machine gun with crew. Troops move off down the hill.

Notes

According to the dopesheet this patrol, under the command of a Major J Nettlefield, left Allied lines outside Grisee at 4am of 7 February 1946. The patrol lasted 11 hours and covered 15 miles of ground, with enemy fire being encountered near Sidemoekto. The dopesheet quotes an extract from a sitrep (situation report) stating that one Indian soldier was wounded.

Although not all shots described in the dopesheet appear in this film, a good impression is given of the terrain and a number of shots are quite atmospheric.
