EXECUTION OF JAPANESE GENERAL BY FIRING SQUAD AT CHANGI AND LADY MOUNTBATTEN VISITS HOSPITALS AT SURABAYA (27/4/1946)

This film is held by the Imperial War Museum (ID: JFU 592).

Synopsis

Part 1, shot by Sergeant Tulloch: Lieutenant-General Fukuye is hooded by a British military policeman (MP); a group includes the MPs, and a Japanese interpreter (?). Fukuye, hooded and wearing handcuffs but with his hands unbound, is led down a flight of steps to the beach at Changi and he is tied to a stake. Fukuye is shot; the paper marker on his chest jerks and an earth bank behind the stake spurts dust. There is little outward sign of his being shot. Two shots of Fukuye's body hanging from the stake.

Part 2, shot by Sergeant Wilcox: Medium wide shot of the execution ground at Changi beach with trees and long grass. Firing squad with rifles levelled; they fire and camera pans to Fukuye's body at the stake. Long lens shot of body at the stake. Closer shot of the body.

Part 3, shot by Sergeant Davis: Lady Mountbatten arrives at a hospital, possibly 82 Indian General Hospital. Walking in the grounds with a nurse. She speaks to a British soldier, possibly Private William of 2nd Battalion The Buffs. Very dark shot, almost totally indicepherable, of Mountbatten talking to a soldier. Mountbatten in the grounds of a Dutch refugee camp. Mountbatten stepping down from an Royal Air Force Douglas Dakota transport aircraft, serial KK205 'Hermes', and she is greeted by Major-General Mansergh. She meets and chats with other officers. Mountbatten and Mansergh. Departing by car. Mountbatten talks with a nun at 'the Roman Catholic hospital'. Mountbatten and party walk along a verandah at the hospital.

Three-part film showing (1&2) two cameramen's coverage of the execution of Lieutenant-General Fukuye Shimpei by firing squad on a beach at Changi, Singapore, and (3) a visit by Edwina Mountbatten to hospitals at Surabaya (Sourabaya/Soerabaja) in Java, Netherlands East Indies (Indonesia).

Notes

Shimpei Fukuye (also Shinpei Fukuei) was executed for his responsibility for the shooting of four Britsh and Australian prisoners of war on 2 September 1942 on Changi beach, and for the 'Selarang Barracks Incident' in which 15,000 prisoners were confined in an area designed for 800. Though not apparent in this silent film, Fukuye apparently gave a loud and clear cry of 'Banzai!' before being shot.

For footage of Lady Mountbatten inspecting hospitals in Batavia (Jakarta), see related items.
