LIFE RETURNS TO MAYMYO

This film is held by the Imperial War Museum (ID: JIN 33).

Synopsis

In Maymyo, prewar summer capital of Burma, civilian life begins to return to normal after the towns liberation from the Japanese.

British servicemen and local civilians outside a large church (probably All Saints). A unit of British troops marches up to church. A unit (the same?) marching off. High shot of the main street of the town, looking down the Lashio-Mandalay road; the building nearest camera is marked New Ceylon-Burma Tra[ding Company?]. Damaged building with Indian troops passing. A jeep, carrying around ten British (officers?) passes camera and a group of British soldiers wave and bow in a mocking but apparently good natured way. View of the church. Troops on the main road. Troops buy vegetables (flowers?) from some Burmese girls. British soldier talking to an English-speaking Shan girl wearing headscarf. Three British soldiers walk along the main road. British soldiers dancing together, to the amusement of other soldiers looking on. Empty road. At an ornamental lake (Harcourt Butler Lake?), six British troops dive off a plinth into the water. Troops swimming in the water. After swimming the men are dished out a meal. Civilians at the bazaar; the stalls are covered in corrugated iron. An Indian soldier shops for vegetables in the bazaar; he is enthusiastically served by the stallholders. Lady stallholders. A lady with parasol walks with an Indian soldier in the bazaar (they are not walking closely together). Burmese ladies sitting in a jeep with an Indian driver. Burmese ladies chat with an Indian soldier. Close-up typical Burmese face. Indian soldier marches alone down an empty road; a (church?) spire rises behind trees.

Notes

As the prewar summer capital, Maymyo (now Pyin Oo Lwin) had strong associations with colonial Burma, and this provides an interesting glimpse of its early postwar experience.
