A captioned amateur film, predominantly colour, shot an edited by Rosie Newman, of aspects of life on the Home Front, Second World War, including unique footage of the London Blitz and some activities of the three armed services to which Miss Newman managed to arrange unprecedented access and permission to film.

Notes

The film would have been shown by Miss Newman with a spoken introduction and a musical accompaniment in the form of records played on a dual turn-table gramophone. The Museum does not hold these records or a complete record of the music used. One record was a recording of part of a poem entitled "Big Steamers" by Elsie Bambridge, which was used to accompany a section of the HMS Berkeley sequence.

The quote "There is but one task for all.." is taken from the poem "For All We Have and Are" by Rudyard Kipling.

This film existed as earlier versions, produced by Miss Newman, under the titles "England at War" and "Britain Through The War". The first version of this film "England at War" was first shown at a private view at the Dorchester Hotel on 7 May 1942 with a public screening at the same location on 3 June 1942.

A copy of "England at War" was acquired by the Imperial War Museum in 2001, film ref MGH 5167.

The film includes a small amount of black and white footage some of which was not shot by Miss Newman.

Miss Rosie Newman had a home in Piccadilly, London, next door to 145 Piccadilly a house used by the Duke of York and his family (later King George VI), before his accession to throne. After her Piccadilly home was damaged in the Blitz, Miss Newman took up residence in the nearby Dorchester Hotel.
