Synopsis

Troops of 10th Indian Division in Italy are decorated in the field by a major-general, while at Buckingham Palace in London King George VI decorates officers and men of 4th Indian Division, including Subedar Lalbahadur Thapa, who receives the Victoria Cross.

Part 1: On a piece of open ground with hills rising behind, a parade of troops of 10th Indian Division come up to attention. A British major-general decorates a number of officers. Part 2: The King, in RAF uniform, steps out onto the quadrangle of Buckingham Palace; Queen Elizabeth follows behind and journalists and photographers are seen in the background. On parade in a single rank are troops of 4th Indian Division. The King and Queen meeting troops (shot from behind the soldiers); one of the escorting officers is an Indian Army major with Indian Artillery cap badge. Medium close-up of a Gurkha, Subedar Lalbahadur Thapa VC. Brief shot shows the King shaking the Thapa's hand. The major is decorated with the Military Cross. A tall British soldier receives the Military Medal. Royal standard flying with tilt down to rank of troops. Alternative angle of the King meeting the troops. Alternative angle King and Queen stepping out onto courtyard and meeting troops. The King decorates Thapa (alternative angle) and shakes his hand. More meeting troops. The troops march off. On the forecourt of Buckingham Palace with crowds against the railings and the Victoria Memorial behind as a car passes.

Notes

Part 1 of this film, the first 96 feet, appears to belong with MWY 96. A dopesheet exists for this Film Number, but describes footage shot in Tripoli, Libya, the previous June. The cameramen for this piece is unknown, and the production date taken from a contemporary newspaper report.

Series note: The MWY series of films is believed to be part of a ‘pool’ of film received by the Government of India from various sources, including South East Asia Command, the Indian Inter-Service Public Relations Directorate, the Ministry of Information, and from Allied governments. This footage would have been considered for editing and release through the Indian Newsreel Parade; see INR series.
