Synopsis

I. "A fillies' St Leger." Herring Bone, a filly, wins the St Leger at Newmarket. Pre-race scenes show many servicemen among the race-goers and a glimpse of a bookmaker at his stand.

II. "Reading between the lines." a. Arrival of the first Canadian-built Lancaster in Britain. b. Mayor of Shoreditch, London congratulates some Indian troops visiting his borough; children then mob an Indian VC winner. c. First view of a giant three-decker bus seating 250; US servicemen clamber in. d. Demonstration of the powerful hand-held flamethrower reported to have been used very effectively against the Japanese at Munda airfield on New Georgia.

III. "The 'Fifth' held on." Second report of the battle of Salerno shows troops and supplies coming ashore on the beachhead. Smokescreen covers the unloading for beach is reportedly under fire. A trophy found intact on an enemy airfield is an FW 190. Elsewhere Italian officers disclose useful information to the British.

IV. "Back again." Churchill with his wife and daughter Mary arrive at a London station after their return from North America. Political and military chiefs are among the crowd who greet them.
