Synopsis

I. "'Downfall of Japan' Conference." Churchill pays a brief visit to Malta before attending the Cairo Conference, which is covered in this item by a long list of names over film of participants posing formally for the cameras: Churchill, Roosevelt, Chiang Kai-Shek and wife; Service chiefs Carton de Wiart, Chow Chih-Jou, Stilwell, Shang Chen, Mountbatten, Brooke, Ismay, Cunningham, King, Leahy, Portal, Dill, Marshal; diplomats Cadogan, Eden, Winant, Macmillan, Wang Chung-Hui, Casey, Killearn, Harriman, Leathers, Hopkins.

II. "Honour the day." Flashback to Roosevelt asking Congress to declare a state of war against Japan introduces general film of American participation in the present struggle: women engaged in war work, troops disembarking in Britain and parading past Buckingham Palace, USAAF day raids, landings in the Pacific, North Africa and Italy. Commentary wonders whether "Japan perhaps started an association of two world powers which will spread its influence down the ages" and over film of warships at sea asks "What may not be possible if the British Empire and USA continue marching together"?
