BRITISH MOVIETONE NEWS ISSUE 778A (4 MAY 1944)

Synopsis

I. "Gunsite get-together." British and American ack-ack units have recently been exchanging officers and men in order to familiarise the Allies with each other. Men are seen together in the mess, being welcomed by an officer and manning ack-ack guns.

II. "Tools to finish the job." Supplies are brought ashore on the Anzio beach-head. In Britain, massive stockpiles of material stand ready for use as soon as the Second Front opens. Horsa gliders towed by Albemarles take off on a practice flight.

III. "Empire Premiers assemble." Commonwealth Prime Ministers arrive in Britain for the first wartime Imperial Conference. Fraser (with Jordan), Mackenzie King (with Massey), Smuts, Southern Rhodesia's Huggins ("no doubt that if the old country really cooperates with her Commonwealth and Empire we can do anything we like and we needn't worry particularly about anybody else") and Curtin (with High Commissioner Bruce) each say a few words to the camera. Conference participants later seen in the garden of No 10 Downing Street with Portal, Sinclair, Cunningham, Eden, Churchill, Beaverbrook, Bracken and Anderson, then indoors at the start of the Conference.
