Notes

Summary (item I): the German Fernlenkboote were steered by means of a trailing cable following instructions from an accompanying seaplane. They were unmanned and carried a 700kg explosive charge. On 28 October 1917, the monitor Erebus, then operating near Ostend, was hit by FL.12. The resulting explosion killed two and wounded fifteen of the ship's crew, destroying about fifty feet of the monitor's protective bulge. Repairs took about three weeks. A few more attacks were made but without further success, and Fernlenkboote were abandoned by the end of 1917.
