Synopsis

I. "Streiflichter aus Deutschland." a. Miners at the Achenbach pit receive CARE parcels (100,000 from US Zone) as incentive/reward. b. Frankfurt's Burgermeister awards Goethe prize for philosophy to Karl Jaspers. c. Wrttemberg folk festival: traditional races between women carrying water, and between shepherds.

II. The Pan-American Conference at Petropolis (near Rio) in Brazil. Film of the US delegation (Marshall, Vandenberg, Connally) and those of other nations (not named); Trygve Lie present as observer.

III. Sport. a. Speedway racing in Garmisch. b. 'Race' between two 5-year olds in powered toy cars. c. German football season gets under way.

IV. "The great drought." Southern Germany after a damagingly dry summer: dried up rivers and lakes; stalled hydro-electric schemes; shrivelled crops, thin cattle etc; peasants ploughing in dry field.

V. Pakistani and Indian Independence. Mountbatten makes formal handover to Jinnah in Karachi; in New Delhi, Nehru speaks from balcony, a parade, and a massive festival/celebration , attended by the Mountbattens.

VI. "Bilder aus aller Welt." Major eruption of volcano in Nicaragua.

Notes

Issue completeness: the Museum's copy of WIF 120 has two items missing, according to the contents list held in the Film and Video Archive, which indicates that they concerned "Christian minister, Japan" and "fast crawling, USA".
