Synopsis

I. Allies capture Mandalay.Film of air strikes and street fighting; soldiers and locals fraternise; Lord Mountbatten.

II. Film of German surrenders. German surrenders at Caserta, at Lneburg Heath (Montgomery, Friedeburg and Kinzel), at Rheims (Jodl, Bedell Smith) and at Berlin (Keitel, Friedeburg, Zhukov, Spaatz, Tedder, de Lattre de Tassigny); German civilians hear news of war's end.

III. Military Government in Germany A sequence of images: civilians looting clothing from train; occupying soldiers restore order (check documents, requisition and distribute food; collection of weapons); restoration of services (coal, electricity etc); de-Nazification; shooting of a saboteur.

Notes

Issue completeness: the Museum's copy of WIF 3 is very incomplete: the contents list held in the Film and Video Archive indicates that the missing items covered the Pontine Marshes, the San Francisco Conference, conditions in Frankfurt, and displaced persons.
