EASTERN BATTLEGROUND

This film is held by the Imperial War Museum (ID: WOY 97).

Synopsis

An introduction for soldiers to far east warfare.

The film gives a background summary of the war in the far east up to 1942 and then goes on to describe the extent of the theatre of war, showing the differing sorts of terrain involved - jungle, swamp, scrub, mountain - and the climate encountered. Particular aspects of warfare in these regions are shown - problems of movement and supply, the danger from wildlife (much played down), the importance of silence and of listening. Comparison is made between the Japanese soldiers and the Allies, ordinary men from all over the world "doing a great job".

Notes

Remarks: a brave stab at demythologising the jungle and the Japanese.
