Synopsis

Opening titles.

I. ‘Novorossisk Recaptured by Soviet Forces’ Item concerning recapture of Black Sea Naval base Novorossisk. Soviet troops seen looking down on city. Heavy artillery bombardment of city from high ground, including Katusha fire. Assault by land and sea. Dramatic footage of fighting inside city. Flag planted above gateway, soldiers cheer, others wave to the camera from a damaged lighthouse as a boat passes by.

II. ‘Wright Brothers, Aviation Pioneers, Honoured by U.S.’ Historical footage (1903) of early aviation attempts. Large dinner function. Orville Wright and General Arnold, Chief of Army Air forces. Wright presents Arnold with ‘the coveted Collier Trophy’. Shot of U.S. bombers flying in formation.

III. ‘Roosevelt Family Holds Holiday Reunion at Home’ Christmas. Shots of FDR surrounded by family.

IV. ‘Australian Boys Learn Seamanship at Marine School’ Various scenes of sea cadets learning the ropes.

V. ‘Churchill Hailed by Troops in Middle East’ Teheran: Churchill inspecting troops on his 69th birthday; three men (including Sikh soldier) stand forward to present him with ‘gifts of rare Persian craftsmanship’ (commentary) – an engraved box and plate, and a miniature painting. He receives these items from the men. Troops rush forward to see him speak, before he in seen walking off with various officers and officials.

VI. ‘U.S. bombers in Mass Attacks on Japanese Bases’ B-25 bombers seen being loaded with bombs; airmen being briefed before boarding aircraft (shots of small dog, who accompanies his master to the steps but does not climb on board). Various views of bombers in flight and of crewmen on board. Dramatic scenes of low-level bombing raids over land and sea before shot of squadron on return flight.
