Synopsis

Documentary of the work of missionaries and the growth of Methodism in the Gold Coast (now Ghana), highlighting evangelism, education and agricultural development.

Reels one and two missing.

Reel three. Wesley College, Kumasi with a tree planted by King Edward VIII. Boy rings a bell, students engage in circle singing and dancing on lawn. One boy climbs a tree to collect seeds for planting. Boy catechists returned from preaching tour have haircuts. Women prepare college meal; slice plantains. Maintainance of the building after damage from tropical climate. African staff bungalows. Staff member's baby in bath. Boys draining swamp to control malaria. Hockey match: Wesley College versus Achimoto Government College. The founder, Dr Aggrey's motto: 'You can get a tune from either white or black keys, but for harmony you need both.' Sports day: racing, hurdling etc. Cape Coast Church. Congregagtion in trasditional dress. Preachers walking down road to visit village. They meet head man (shown relaxing on chair), and oldest inhabitant (a lady seen shaking hands with visitors), and conduct Sunday school sessions where children dramatise the story of the Good Samaritan, using a stool as the donkey. 'Lyric singers' perform for the village. The Synod ('a grand place for fellowship'). A parade of black and white church workers. Cocoa workers cutting pods off trees whilst children extract beans into baskets and cover them with plantain leaves. Beans are dried in sun, 'head-loaded' to market, bought by brokers (one of whom is female), and inspected by Cadbury's agents by popping them into their mouths. They are then sewn up in large bags, taken by train or lorry to the port and loaded onto ships. Oarsmen on surf-boats sing to the beat of the paddles. View of the harbour.

Reel four. Native members in fishing industry: mending nets, pushing boats into waves and drying fish. Car journey along country roads to inland market where dried fish is sold. Market scenes. "Home again". Weaver working on a small hand- loom. Denkera cloth imprinter stamping designs on cloth. Designs have special meanings, eg 'to remove evil' which is kept next to the Ashanti king. A star represents 'I rest with God and do not depend upon myself'. "Trivial round, common task". Women carrying loads of plantain, and, with help from a man, pounding mealie. Missionary separating seeds from flax(?). The parable of the mustard seed represented by an enormous tree with girls playing beneath it. "Cape Coast Castle (1675)" Site of slave trade shown. Chart of statistics of the growth of Methodism in the colony. Examples of Methodist churches throughout the colony. Mother church in Cape Coast. Plaque commemorating pioneer missionaries like J Dunwell. Saltpond, Winnebah, Kumasi, Accra (the grave of Thomas B Freeman), Somanya (members seen building it with timber from ex-fetish tree), Senchi Ferry (built by ferrymen). Ferry unloading cars, trucks etc. "Methodist book depot" Imposing colonnaded building. More statistics. Tribal chiefs carried on litters with canopies. Moslems in turbans on horseback. Half-naked northern tribes in thatched villages. Moslem tribesman breaking in a horse. Indigo dyer dipping thread into clay jars. "Challenge to Church". Hand plays black and white keys of piano. Words of 'Onward Christian Soldiers'
